Food systems transformation has a central role to play not only in increasing food security but also in reducing poverty, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The Markets, Trade, and Institutions (MTI) Unit provides innovative, evidence-based policy solutions to help drive inclusive economic growth for small producers and food industries along food value chains. By analyzing local, regional, and global economic environments, trade conditions, and value chains, MTI identifies policies that can transform agricultural and rural economies. These include improving global and national institutions, promoting market efficiency, reducing transaction costs, and improving market access and incomes for smallholders and small and medium enterprises within the food system. MTI conducts research in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Key research areas include innovations for inclusive value chains, improving institutions and infrastructure, trade and agricultural support, labor markets, credit, insurance, and financial markets, crisis response, and food and water safety. A gender perspective is integrated into all MTI research, recognizing the benefits of inclusive agricultural transformation. MTI also contributes to capacity strengthening and knowledge sharing through initiatives like the Food Security Portal, AGRODEP, and the Value Chains Knowledge Clearinghouse. MTI’s research and expertise also contribute to global agendas, including G20 and World Trade Organization discussions on trade and farm policy.
